Lehmann Gallery / Ángela Jiménez Durán

The Word for World is Poem | A Palavra para Mundo é Poema is the first solo exhibition by Ángela Jiménez Durán (b. 1996, Madrid; lives and works in Paris) at Lehmann Gallery.
The exhibition’s title draws inspiration from Ursula K. Le Guin’s seminal science fiction novel The Word for World is Forest, in which an alien language uses a single word to encompass both “world” and “forest”. Borrowing from this ecological and linguistic overlap, Jiménez Durán constructs a territory where poetry becomes the foundational principle for world-building. Spanning painting, sculpture, and installation, the exhibition draws visitors into a choreography of entities and poems, invoking the artist’s ongoing investigation
into the four elements, material transformation, and geological fiction. By engaging with the agency of matter, Jiménez Durán blurs the boundaries between the human and the non-human, and her work unfolds as a discontinuous narrative in which materialities and fictional elements intertwine to imagine uncertain futures.
Song (for Ángela Jiménez Durán)
And the waters all came
at the right time
to hear your song.
And some fell from the sky,
some slid
down the embankment
and others gushed forth,
geyser-like,
from the centre of the earth,
in the concrete certainty
that the poem
you deliver
is one of these airy places
of the possibility
of our continuing.
And few things more
moving:
to offer the world
the poem
that continues it.
The Word for World is Poem functions
as a three-leaf screen where we find three figures:
The word.
The world.
The poem.
Like a love letter that is opened with the curiosity of receiving affection upon paper, the screen delivers its images one by one, just like a tarot deck shuffled for an encounter with time. And, when it is gathered, after days of being open, and the panels meet, already folded, it tells us: A word is a world, is a poem, and is a world once again.
A poem is an elementary configuration that gathers the windows of all the houses where we have ever lived and polishes them, until there remain only and solely the shapes of the frames, clean and already removed from their utilitarian value. To find our poem is to allow ourselves to collect all the openings of the places through which light entered, light that, unlike almost everything, does not
negotiate the occupation of space.
In the revelation that poetry is the fundamental means of conjugating the world, the exercise of verse will be the driving force behind daily sustenance. The brilliant Natália Correia used to say to those undernourished of dreams that poetry is to be eaten, a source of unique and vital potency. Unlike food ingested through the mouth, we do not choose this one, as it enters us straight through the ears and the eyes: its own home, this body. Poetry is generous and luminous like light, and so, each time we give ourselves over and open up to the poem, the images of what is essential are redistributed. After all, the fairest thing we can do with our life is to deliver to it its song. And anything other than that will be judged meagre, it will be very little indeed, and neither we nor any other entity will even remember it.
To deliver the song.
It is certain that water is the oldest means of transport and communication we know. Song is words mixed with water, and that is why people sometimes drool when they sing or tear up as soon as they are moved while speaking of the beautiful, which is the same thing.
As if all the water existing in the body manifested itself in the moments when we tell our most intimate, vulnerable, and cherished stories, in a single movement that wishes to overflow it, such is the enthusiasm for the expression of what runs inside, driven by a gush of energy. And even sweat, seasoned with salt, appears expanding freely across the skin.
The sentences running across taut linen, the seemingly damp and shiny matter of the summoned beings, the colour of a full moon, and the clay in raw, muscular earthenware. All of this is Ángela Jiménez Durán revealing her song to us. And, to sing it to us, she chooses as title The Word for World is Poem, in direct company of Ursula K. Le Guin’s book, The Word for World Is Forest, because opening
ourselves is also reuniting with those we feel close to us, and that always surpasses the conventions of space and time.
We can then read the exhibition from three acts: the world presented by loved ones, ancestral beings invited for this moment; the integration of the verb into the linen canvases, like a choreographed aquatic landscape; and the inner world, which erupts from the lower floor and feeds existence with vigour. The feeling that there is a civilisational, verbal matter circulating, which constructs and is constructed by history, accompanied by the ancient beings who visit it and by water itself, is put into perspective by the robustness of the raw matter, which erupts from the subsoil with a sensual playfulness. Knowing its charm, the ancestors wish to know its reverse, and, for that reason, remain in the room until the end.
One of the entities present is Balzac himself, in a direct reference by Jiménez Durán to the bronze sculpture of the writer, commissioned from Rodin and exhibited in public space in Paris in 1939. Balzac thought of water as a direct access to nostalgia, unlike the mountains and the green landscape, which resolve it. Perhaps his presence in the room relates to the curiosity of knowing this new clay, freshly arrived and adventurous in its ways; perhaps he still has something more to tell us.
And there we shall be, we and the works, to listen to him. The sculpture that welcomes us at the entrance, ear of the universe, tells us that this is a place of constant listening: of whoever visits, but also of whoever is there, the works themselves, in a continuous process of development and openness to the momentum.
