Madre Museum / Raffaela Naldi Rossano, Effe Minelli, Andrea Bolognino, Jimmie Durham

Living Collapse looks at the Neapolitan nativity scene (presepe) as an art form capable of speaking to a contemporary sensibility. Moving beyond antiquarian, iconographic, or folkloric readings, the exhibition focuses on the critical potential of this sculptural practice.
An entry point for this reinterpretation is provided by a work from the museo Madre collection: Presepio by Jimmie Durham. The heterogeneity of the world is reflected in the polymateriality of the sculpture, where diverse, often discarded materials become the expression of a reality inhabited by multiple presences, in which human and non-human, natural and artificial, sacred and profane coexist.
As in the Baroque presepe, where the nativity scene is absorbed into an abundant world that dissolves any stable perspective, it appears as a fragment of the world in which the hierarchies of the living are reconfigured. Human and non-human animals, plants, and rocks converge; the boundaries between destruction and regeneration, erosion and accumulation, become uncertain. Moss turns into rock and then cork; the ruin of a temple becomes a grotto; and the poor shepherd and his flock share the scene with the highest manifestation of the sacred. The divine does not emerge from the center but disperses within the teeming density of things, in a totality that denies any singular or hierarchical perspective, any class distinction. The resulting optical anarchy reflects a proto-ecological sensitivity and a profound openness to difference, rooted in a pre-Enlightenment and cosmopolitan world such as Baroque Naples.
The exhibition invites three artists to expand this conceptual horizon, avoiding direct references to the form of the nativity scene while activating some of its deeper components: the redefinition of cohabitation within a collapsing world; the indeterminacy between construction and ruin; and an anti-hierarchical approach to alterity. Works by Andrea Bolognino, Effe Minelli, and Raffaela Naldi Rossano shape a landscape in which different practices resonate with one another and with a fragment of a traditional nativity scene created in the museum galleries by master artisan Giuseppe Ercolano.
Living Collapse is part of the second edition of Premio Meridiana, curated by Mario Francesco Simeone and promoted by the Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee – museo Madre and the association Amici del Madre, dedicated to supporting curatorial research and the emerging artistic scene of Southern Italy. The exhibition engages with the theme of the first edition of the Prize, Everything is in All Things, inspired by the novel Conversation in Sicily by Elio Vittorini.
