Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien / Steinunn Önnudóttir

In her exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, marking the end of her residency, Steinunn Önnudóttir creates a site-specific installation exploring the fragile balance between decay and growth. Engaging with the visual and material language of these processes, she reveals the subtle, often overlooked dynamics that shape urban space.
At the center of the installation stands a massive arch, scorched and imposing - its form evoking both industrial production and a romanticized natural landscape. Yet the illusion collapses: a large, uprooted tree-like sculpture lies on the ground, symbolizing the tension between organic growth and human interference.
Algae seem to rise along the walls like a painterly gesture, hovering between chance and control. The windows are veiled with a greenish film, blurring the outside view and merging architecture into the work - softening the division between interior and exterior space.
Önnudóttir treats the cycles of growth and decay as metaphors for confronting capitalist logic, which seeks to exploit nature while simultaneously taming it. Her installation critically reflects on Green Growth and Degrowth, revealing how the term green is increasingly used to mask expansionist agendas.
